PhD programmes have been a major area of interest for the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT). To aid the vision of the institute and to provide quality research, the Department of Biotechnology has been constantly working on various thrust areas of Biotechnology with the aim of emerging as a technologically and academically advanced department.
The PhD programme at the Department of Biotechnology mainly focusses on the areas of natural product therapeutics, microbial and food technology, environmental biotechnology, protein engineering and medical biotechnology. By now, the department has awarded more than 45 PhD degrees in diverse research fields.
The laboratories for PhD scholars in the department are spacious and equipped with advanced research instruments for biochemical, microbiological and molecular techniques, such as electrophoresis studies, immuno-technology studies, protein expression and purification, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, genomics applications, cell culture technology, molecular cloning methodologies and bioinformatics software applications with appropriate biosafety compliance. Separate research laboratories are dedicated to nanotechnology, plant tissue culture, animal tissue culture, functional genomics, transcriptomics, bioremediation, microbial biotechnology, novel drug delivery system and many more under the umbrella of two major centres- Centre for Emerging Diseases and Centre for Plant and Microbial Biotechnology.
PhD in biotechnology is well designed with modules targeted towards knowledge building. Students are given opportunity to attend conferences, workshops as well as training and development programmes to acquaint them with recent trends in the field of biotechnology. The department motivates its research scholars to apply for funding and scholarship opportunities. As a result, many scholars are funded with fellowships from Department of Biotechnology (DBT), DST-Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (DST-INSPIRE), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). The funding, infrastructure, facilities, and support in the form of collaborations facilitate cutting-edge research.
