Department of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering (PMSE) offers several basic and advanced courses on physics and materials science to B.Tech students of ECE, CSE, IT and Biotech branches. The Department also offers courses to PhD students and the students of two year M. Sc. program in Physics. The goal of Physics as perceived by the Department is to understand the working of everything in the physical world from the first principles. In addition, materials are perceived as something that make everything around us and consequently their properties are critical to the performance of any system, device or technology used today. The Department combines physics and materials science to solve real-world problems associated with energy, nanotechnology, quantum devices, optics and other major engineering disciplines. The knowledge acquired from the training in physics and materials science enables students to analyze and solve complex problems in any technical area. The Department has research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment.
The Department also has Ph.D program in research areas of Nanoscience and Multifunctional Nanomaterials, Energy and Advanced Functional Materials, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Photonics and Plasmonics, Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Optical Sensors, Vibrational Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Solid State Ionics, Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (Spintronics), Thermoelectric and Superconducting Materials and Laser Plasma Interaction. Until now, the Department has produced 33 Ph.Ds and at present, 28 students are pursuing their Ph.D in various fields of research. In addition, faculty members of the Department mentor post-doctoral fellows. Presence of post-doctoral fellows and a good number of externally funded projects enhance the academic ambience of the Department.
Special Cell/Chapter/Body
The Department has two actively running student chapters of the international organizations: 1) JIIT- Optical Society of America (OSA) 2) JIIT- American Chemical Society (ACS) which exposes student to the international experts and let them learn the very new in the field of research and technology.
International Collaborations
Faculty of the Department have been actively working with some of the leading universities/ institutes in the world. To name a few of them, it may be mentioned that the Department has active collaboration with Palacky University, Czech Republic; University of Nebraska at Omaha, USA; University of New Brunswick, Canada; Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland; RIKEN, Japan; University of Pittsburgh, USA; University of Malaya, Malaysia; Stuttgart University, Germany; CIICAp-Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos, Mexico. Existing international collaborations have led to many exciting research output and joint research projects.

Thrust Areas of Department
Both experimental and theoretical research works are going on in the Department. The experimental research is carried out on the synthesis, characterization and applications of advanced materials (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, nanomaterials, organic, diluted semiconducting, organized assemblies, conducting polymers, bio-molecules). In addition, experimental work is also done in the emerging area of quantum communication. The experimental research is supplemented by a strong theoretical group which works in different areas such as quantum optics, quantum information theory, spectroscopy, plasma physics, atomic, molecular and laser physics, nanostructures, thermoelectric and superconducting materials. A representative list of the thrust areas of the Department is given below.
- Advanced Functional Materials
- Atomic Molecular and Laser Physics
